E99 Gandhi was the first Eastern person to “successfully” question the impacts of unsustainable globalization or more than a fifth of the world’s people. When we say successful, he:

ü      freed India but at the cost of his own life,

ü      freed a lot of the East from Empire but sadly in Insia’s case not yet from top-won bureaucracy though the billion person digital identity suggests India is at an extraordinary social-tech crossroads in 2018-2024

ü        the subcontinent was partitioned against gandhi’s hopes ; in ways that disunited what are new recognised as the 3 large separated populations India (2nd), Pakistan (5th) , Bangladesh (8th).

Currently other top 10s in population are: 1 China, 3 USA, 4 Indonesia, 6 Brazil, 7 Nigeria, 9  Russia 10 Japan. Note one of the challenges of mapping today’s crisis of” can our species globalize sustainably” is that USA is the only top 10 western nation in terms of population though with China its economic size makes up over 40% of the world’s financing

For half of his life Gandhi was an underemployed barrister. For the second half he questioned how the empire’s economic system which he had been legislating for was the transformational crisis he needed to spend his life changing. He realised that he would need to pant a totally new education system before taking on the media challenge of freeing his people. Gandhi was at the crossroads of so many ruval geopolitical and cultural factions that we aim to focus on a shortlist of observable happenings

As a young man Gandhi judged that there wasn’t anything worth studying at the nediocre universities available to Indians in the 1880s Mumbai region *histirically called Bombay). He borrowed from his extended family to go and study at the Bar of London. There ironically he concluded my peer students are mainly an old boys club drunk by 4pm. Gandho started a multicultural students union united round teetotalism. This was his first step to building a global personal network

On becoming a barrister, Gandhi returned to India to find little employment. He seeked out a living also doing a bit of social journalism for a local newspaper. When he was particularly proud of a story. he reprinted it as a leaflet which he pais strret children to massively post. One of these leaflets was noticed by raj officials whose report bacl to London and across the mpire accidentally became step 2 of Gandhi as a global personality

He was invited by Indians in South Adrican to go and represent their causes as that country’s legislature spiraled towards apartheid. It was only when Gandhi was himself thrown out of a first class carriage to spend a night on a rural platdorm that he had the aha moment, the very law I am confined to argue within is destroying the local sustainability of my people. That was 1906 and Gabdhi was middle aged.

Gandhi formed an extraordinary oidea which he spent the next uqrater of his life on continuing a commuter path triangle between India south adrica and London. He needed to assemble a whole new education system for every age group before publically taking on British barristers back in India. One result of this search was a partnership with Maria Montessor who brought village vocational schooling to India with Gandhi. Gandhi turned away from a barrister’s oratory- wherever he could he would appeal to the bristish sense of fair play by doing the right thing. By accidnent one of his landings in the UK was the day world war broke out. For several months passenger ships to India stopped. As a pacifist his solution was to be a nurse in London for several months. The last time Gandhi was at a public meeting in London was 2006 in the large theatre opoiste Eston station owned by the quahers. Their thousands of people swarmed only to see Gandhi in true quaker tradition not wanting to speak but wishing to listen to one question from each audience member

On permanent return to India, Gandgi’s “peaceful resistance” staged huge media events. Like the salt march from city to coast where thousands of people collected salt from the sea- an illegal act as saly manufacturing was legislated as a monopoly business to a british company

My family’s 5 generations of diaspora scots knows a little aboiut Gnadhi as for 25 years my grandfather sir Kenneth Kemp was the barrister appointed to be chef justice of Mumbai. Another part of our family tree were nurses and phramacits- a roundabout in Mumbia is still named Kemps corner after the city’s first retail pharmacy.

Grnadads 25 year mediation with Gandhi spanned from a court case where he asked Gandi to recommend his own prison snetnce to granads last job writing up the legaese for India’s Inxdependence as Britain a nation more or less bankrupted in winning world war  started a hasty exited from colonies . The positive opportunity to refrane free world trade first argued for by Adam Smith in the 1760s opened up in the Eastren hemisphere. Ironically the countries that have done most to map win-win-win world trade (ie between nations and across generations) are in chronological order jpan s korea, Chinese diaspora superports, China mainland , parts of Asean.

Belt Road mappingng could be described as sustainability gaols opportunity to put every natins youth first by redigning a 21st c world where open education grows people-centric economies. That would mean that Gandhi’s Satyagraha belonds to a world that is not just China’s dream ,  nor just the oriental spirit of followers of tao, Confucius, mahishi or zen or Damo but also mandela’s in Africa, francis’s in latin America and latin Europe and the Philippines, the goal of Marxist future hostoiries and other mathematically transparent system mapamakers you can search for including those in the right hand column

One good fortune surrounding Gnandhi was the number of people he inspired to be his diarists/journalists by writing down their own observations of his actions. Whats interesting is slogans Gandhi is famed for are demonstrated by hundreds of observations not one key note speech. For example be the change you want to be is left for interpretation. Yes it is about small is beautiful and self-rgansiaing but its also about on this conteint small may be beautiful but large scale povert alleviation is absolutely essential. (Sir Fazle Abed)

Again gandhi’s famed talisman which can be translated into both what society and ehat economy are we peacefully trying to linkin around a sustainable planet is left first and foremost for a young inquiring mind to celebrate with peers by action learning not just by chatting up

There are 8 “western-known” system-designing people whose stories are worthy particularly of girl’s future historians inter-relating with Gandhi.

What Gandhi would call the ehole truth  lesson from these WRJC it is that economists have always been dominated by 2 exactly opposite mindsets: those that value sustainability of future generation, and those that do the opposite. This second group has 2 segments : those that know they are hiring themselves to men who are all about taking now with no care for our children’s children, and those who are simply blinded by some sort of groupthink to what they are actually aiding

James Wilson and Walter Bagehot who preceded Gandhi and helped Victoria to see that Empire needed changing. Adam Smith whom Wilson and Bagehot were 3rd and 4th generation alumni of. Karl Marx a contemporary of Wilson but whose orbit out of Germany wasn’t that well known to Wilson as dar as we can search.

Einstein and Kissinger who mainly came after Gandhi. Keynes whi was a contemporary of Gandhi’s but who had so many questions to ask about failed western economics between the two world wars that he is often misquoted

While we may call  them western they has the curiosity to question beyind the ruling system and I several cases were part of a diaspora  or refugees (whose  land-based home nation was no longer sustaining their kinf of people)
