Mrs. Angel Mi Lin
X SCHOOL
Founder
China

Biography
Mrs. Angel Mi Lin has 20 years of experience in China’s Education and Training Industry. She is the Co-Founder of Global Citizen Training School in Jilin China, leading the school to be a reputable organization in local market but will national reputation. She is now the Co- Founder and CEO of X SCHOOL in Beijing China overseeing its strategic development and daily operations. Receiving education in China and seeing deficiencies in the Chinese education system, Angel began her journey of closing the gap when she was in university in 1995. She started by teaching some “bad students” at her small but cozy home for free in her own way. 12 months later, these students became top students in their classes. Encouraged by this, she began to help more “bad students" and students from economically inferior families whom are conventionally regarded “hopeless” in the China context. By 1997, she already had 120 students, and more students were coming to her. Then her first training centre was set up on the 24th December 1997, and now, the Jilin Global Citizens Training School has grown to be the most popular organization in northern China with over 10,000 students, most of whom are the “bad students” and “poor students”. When most of the Chinese training organizations are focused on test skill training for quick money, Angel saw the serious negative impact this has brought to the Chinese children and youth, including ignorance of life skills and social skills, high academic pressure, isolation from main streams, mental and psychological disorder, dropouts from schools, etc., she established the X SCHOOL in Beijing in 2015, wishing to help Chinese students to involve in international education, survive in international environment and thrive in globalization era. Although what the future world looks like is not yet clear, X SCHOOL strives to close the gap with quality education programs developed over the years and educate Chinese children and youth in ways that better prepare them for the VUCA world so that it can nurture the first generation of global citizens and global leaders who can think globally and act locally. Over 50 parents have joined together as investors to help with the growth of X SCHOOL, and more parents are joining every single day. Angel Mi Lin would very much like to give a short talk, sharing her visions and insights on how a non-government organization can help to supplement the national education system while preparing students for this VUCA world in a very practical way. We would appreciate it greatly if you could please help to make this happen so that her talk can inspire millions more around the globe.

Megan has served the IEFG in the role of coordinator since 2013. Ms Larisa Hovannisian
Teach for Armenia
CEO & Founder
United States of America
Domains of expertise
Nonprofit management

Biography

Larisa was born in Yerevan, Armenia, to an Armenian mother and an Irish-American father, and spent her childhood moving between the farthest freezing reaches of Siberia to the sunny beaches of California. She studied International Business & Language at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin and received her M.A. in Special Education from Arizona State University. But it wasn’t until Larisa joined Teach For America and stepped foot into a classroom of her own – spending two years teaching children with mild to severe disabilities in Phoenix, Arizona – that Larisa’s vision came into focus. When her two years were up, she would move back to her homeland of Armenia with a simple mission: “to provide all children of Armenia with an opportunity to attain an excellent education.” This was easier said than done, because as Larisa and her passionate entrepreneurial team soon discovered, it was the entire culture of education that needed to be reformed. If Teach For Armenia – her new organization – was to succeed, it would need to facilitate nothing short of transformational change in how education was perceived to begin with. Ministers would need to be challenged, principals persuaded, teachers enlightened, parents partnered with, stereotypes broken, and communities rejuvenated with the promise of education. That transformation change is well under way. Today Teach For Armenia is the most dynamic and effective educational organization in Armenia, impacting over 5,000 students across the country. Since its launch in 2013, Teach For Armenia has garnered the support of Armenia’s Ministry of Education, principals, parents, students, leading Armenian universities, as well as private sector champions. And her Fellows – the brightest, most dynamic leaders teaching in the most underprivileged schools of the country – are accomplishing nothing short of a miracle in their classrooms. They are giving knowledge, hope, and a world of possibility to the children of Armenia. Teach For Armenia is part of Teach For All, the global network of over 40 independent, locally led and funded partner organizations whose shared mission is to expand educational opportunity around the world by increasing and accelerating the impact of social enterprises that are cultivating the leadership necessary for change.
