Open Spaces for Waves of Optimism

During the race to the moon, waves of optimism about blending inteligence of man, computing and satellite communications grew worldwide. Maybe the human race could celebrate the start of a new milennium with no more wars and an end to endemic poverty (even as a privileged group G8 nations raced to the moon about half the human race of 1967 still had no access to electricity grids)

Also various exponential Moores Laws were hypothesised and brainstormed. Famously Intel opened space to what if computing power (silicon chips) doubles every 18 months for decades to come. My father Norman Macrae at The Economist framed an alternative social moores law. What if we are accelerating an Entrepreneuruial Revolution doubling invstment of time and money in communications techonolgy every 7 years - back from 2030 to 1946 that will be over 4000 (2**12) times MOORE? Will the worldwide networking consequences of all this new media be good or bad? What will happen when for the first time man scales interventions with the same planet wide scale as nature's evolution dynamics? Media gravitaes the powerful except when it is empowering. Remember Hitler only needed the tiny advantage of the audio recorder to propogate his evil message 24/7 while opposnents had to make each of their radio speeches live.

World Record Jobs searchers invite you to vote by 7 year time intervalss -whose alumni networks have mapped what in celebrating entrepreuneurial opportunities thriving in every community . Here are some updates on recent time periods. But in this column what if everyone was free to celebrate the future consequences of these 3 Amercans?

Von Neumann's work as father of the programable computer 1946-1953

Demings work as leader of leaps forward in engineering quality maasively transforming his alumni 1953-1960 - emrcaing civil enginneering, electronic engineering (applications such as celebrating sports) as well as trains and boats and cars...

JFK's poromotion of 5000 of america's brightest minds round the goal of racing to the moon 1960-1967

and these 3 Asians:

1967-1974 Fazle Abed who from Birth of Bangakdesh as nation chnaged his life from national ceo of the oil multinational to shell to living and learing with the world's poorest women- an exponential for ngo parthers ending poverty in its 46 th year in 2018

1981-1988 Xi Jinpings first essays on ending poverty were published in 1988- his higer education was unusual- age 16 he was sent to a remote vilage with a chest of text books and asked to rewrite what villages age 16-20 needed to learn most; this he then shared in helping tsinghua redesign its public service curriculum (the only western parallel to tgis is how paul farer helped rewrite its case stude=ies inmediacl anthropolgy) - China and everyone who trades with China can value how much xi kniows aboul developing peopes places to end inequality

1988-1995 IN 1994 Jack Ma ended nearly 20 year of being Hangzhou youth's main englih teacher and tirist guide- his first trip to usa caused what was then the most practical east-west question a techologist ahs ever asked- given there is as yet no www in china how can it be designed to maxiise livelihoods of chinese youth and all workdwide frieds they make

==========

An update from 2002

These are the most exciting times to be alive as primarily 3 generations choose whether to invest in worldwide youth as first sustainability generation

Here are some of the questions we explored in editing the biography of world record job creator jihn vin neumann

how is it that education has vever eulated the crop of mathematicians that emerged as 20th c youth from Russia and Hungar and emigrated to usa?

Before computers what was the role of the few people who made a living from analysisng numbers, and how did that chnage when mass media involved every vested interest hring a numbers academic

how much was von neumans obsession to design computers to do good for humanikty conditioned by the bad luck that he had to spend his brghtest yeras on nuclear science

why did so many of von neumanns peers oppose his desire to open source all his post-nuclear work?

more

which uses of digital cooperation woukd Neumann love today- we expect he would support mapping- every youth in a counytry that isnt yet fully developed due to history of colonisation could be assemblikng their own belt road maps - see if you country has a silk road chamber of commerce , ask your branch of confucius institute whether they can help local student clubs who want to map world trade routes and SDG economic zones, or see if those teaching foreign langauges will help bridge gtransatirs and coders the way Jack Ma demonstrates as pro-youth educatir if the 2020s and ask if your conuntry values a future of public service and foreign exchange university

Here are 3 questions which (if we humans are driven more by learning than sex) may explain how and why you spend time networking. THese questions are part if 60 yeras of surveying how people can help other peopels nations which my fathers life was devoted to typically at The Economist www.normanmacrae.net  (also borderless maps of www.EconomistRefugee.com and 20 other Economist Co-blogs including EconomistDiary.com  ...)

  1. Do you know how to map world trade routes? Yes or No
  2. Are you type B or A - in other words. would you say you are driven by business or Action-for-Society?
  3. Sustainability- do you believ that preventing extinction of our species is the most urgent innovation purpose that could be uniting worldwide youth and parents today or not

Approximate as some of this information may be, lets try and assemble some notes about on human development on planet earth, which are indeed shocking because they are both veriiably true but also unknown by many people because they were banned from how English speaking education systems (including co;lege certificates of all our childrens IQ and so-called professional potential) were designed

Fact 1 90% of world trade is done with ships (this means that communities that dont have equal access to ocean trade are at huge business and social didadvantages regarding every way that globalisation is designed)

Fact 2- lets suppose you are a coding wizard- do you understand that your app is unlikely to grow worldwide - whether it is to do with e-finanace, e-commerce, e-learniong, e-anything unless the connectiosn your users can make with wor;d trade routes and/or nations' goodwill relationship cultures with other nations .

Explanation - there are today 2 fundamemtally different types of market:

those where some physical thing needs to be passed through a trading channel

those where no physical thing needs to be exchnsged provided all potentialplayes in the market have mobile connections- of course code is the purest form of this 2nd type of market- once made it can be distributed even to a billion people at next to no physical cpst assuming local to global mobile connectivity

3 Did you know that up to 1500 empires (eg Roman Greek Egyptian Confucian...) had far more cultural consequences for most peoples lives than nation states ( geogrpahically probably less than 5% of people lived in national jursidictions)

SPECIAL QUIZ ON BEFORE AND AFTER 1500

Did you know that the 2 great navigational discoveries (the new world "America" across the Atlantic Ocean, that Asia had a souther coat that could be accessed from Europe by circumnavigating Africa) caused mainly 4 mercantile empires (Britain Frnace Spain Portugal) to be born which set out to colonise other peoples places.  Classroom education systems as we subject children to them  today were a highly censored knowledge system of the colonisers especially the British.

One of the curricula banned from teaching, let alone studying, was how are world trade routes developd. As we have noted these maps are absolutely critical to all 21st e-market platforms including e-finance, e-commerce, e-learning, anything e- that urgently needs to be linked by the sutainabilouty generation as the era of 4000 times moore digital connecyivity comes to its climax in 2030.

This ban by Britannia's bureaucrats (they who lead the chant - rule britannia, britannia rules the waves, britons never never shall be slaves - implying others should be?)  because such studies would have involved seeing how your peoples markets/conomies were taken over by the colonisers. For example in 1500 the places sharing the south asia coastline including what we today call Pakoistan-India-Bangladesh would have represented about 20% of the world's people and of the world's economy. By 1843 when The Economist was launched to demasnd that London's Royal Society bring new transparency to world trade mapping and other crises that colonisation had spun, the Indian subcontinent's 20% of peoples had less than 5& of the world economy and were being partitioned into cultyral dissoance as well as poverty. Although Queen Victoria did start changing the english constitutuon with a drive towards commonwelath, it took another 100 years and two world wars to essentially end Colonisation of Asia by the British. Sadly Colonial Britain's last 19th C attempt to dictates a region's market trades came in 1860 where the Britisd demanded China accept opium as a currency to be exchanged for china's highly valued silks and spices. China's one fifth of the world people and hitherto 20% of the world economy prefered to close their markets  to the outside world fr over 100 years than to accept the Opium proposition. Can you can start to see why world trade mapping has never been taught in English speaking education systems" Interestingly in 1906 when a middled age Gandhi working as a Bar of London Barrister in South Africa had the aha moment that the English legal system was biassed against his people and indeed peoples of every color other than white, he deternined the need to redesign a vocational education system through every grade before head on demanding legal independence of South Asian from Britain. Maria Montessorri partnered Gandhi in redesigning primary school systems.

DID YOU KNOW OF THE MAIN WORLD TRADE MAP UP TO 1500, WT!:

Practically speaking the only known world was Europe, Asia, and N Africa ( in the unknown world native people were mainly tribal )

Trade over any significant dustance was extremely costly and physically onerous unless you had access to waterways- overland trade requred horsepower (camel power, man power) until the invention of engines starting Industrial Revolution in Britain of the 1700s.

In spite of this the greatest world trade route was overland, and uo tgo 1500 it extended from west to erastg across the continents of EurAsia. If you started around the Lebanon Coastline (typically latitude 30) you were at the overland crossroads to 3 continent landmasses (to and from Europe, Asia, Africa) as well as the ocean gateway to all nations sharing the med sea. Remarkably an overland relay keeping close to latitude 30 extended all the way to the Eurasia's Eastern Coastal Belt - what we would today call China and north of Latitude 40 to Korean Penisular and Russia which makes up the rest of Eurasia's Eastern Coastal Belt as well as most of North Eurasia which being the arctic circle hasnt be seaworthy until recent advances in ice-breakers

Called the Silk Road the world's trade route was really one great relay of neigboring places- it zigged between friendly places- those that were hostile or which failed to keep traders safe were bypassed.
