WRJC 1.1 Mahatma Gandhi- we like to explore unique soliutions with WRJC - these are some of the things taht we have tried to understand about gandhi

How did he become a superstar in the 1920 on the old world's 3 continetns - his home base of India, Europe out of UK, Africa out of south afrrica? how did he want to chamge job creating opportunities in india and indeed anywhere that had lost the freedom to run its own economy to colonial empires -in the case of asia's largest populations ro the british empire! .  What was the mian question he asked anyone he met during the sceond half of his life? Whose youth have gaiend thye most from Gandhi and if his peoples  on the India subcontinet havent gained as much as he dreamed- what sustems still need changing and what do youth newtorks need to be empoweered to  action learnt?

Around 1888 the teenage Gandhi decided there wasnt any college curriculum in Mumbia region worthy of lifetime learning. He crowdfunded from his extended family to go study law at the then centre of global empire- the bar of london. Gandhi wasnt that happy - most of his peer stduents were drunk by teatime- he orgaised a studemt club of every culture that didnt enjoy alcolhol and prefered vegetarian. Many of his peers journalised around him in what became the most extraordinary network of his day. On return to India, he soon found he was too qualified as a Barrister for local work and passaged to South Africa where he worked professioally for nearly 25 years. Gandhi's profesisonal life was to hub through India, S Africa and London. As he becamse more famous Gandhi ran a mentotring colege whenever he was shipping between these 3 regions.

It wasnt to half way through his life in 1906 that Gandhi discovered the number 1 question of his lifelong teaching and learning. From that time on - nobody could engage Gnadhi is msll chat. He would soon turn any converstion round to his talisman - what do you do of any use to the poorest person you have ever met. If you can dare yourself to ask that question you can be teh change you dream of being in life.

It took being thrown off a train for having the wrong colored skin to sit in furst class for Gandhi's aha moment. His diaries show that from 1906 his quest was how to chnage education in India at every age group. He wanted a demonatrstion mlodel befotre he took on the English as a barrister demanding independence of his peoples and indeed of much of the Eastern world. Whilst still in south africa he set up some experimental rural colleges including Toplstoy Farm. Gandgi's methodsplamted seeds whih decades later Nelson Mandela was to recultivate.

Ironically world war 1 broke out on one of Ganhi'as trips just as he had arrived on London. For several months he served as a first aid worker before he could move on. Quaker movements and others in London increasingly valued Gandhi's Round Tables- he filled the 1000+ person ampoihetreof Euston house on his last trip to London1925?. In fact Gandhi's folowing was growing from people across Europe- one of his most exciting supporterdrs Maria Montesoori moved his life's work on vocational education from Italy to India

He was to sped much of his next decade viralosing actions outof Mumbai which meade the Englosh attempt to rule India look anything but wise. His slat march of hundredso\f compatriots ended on a beach wher British police beat up ndian poeple for t6rying t6o collect salt- a british manufacturing monoply. My grandfather as Chief Justoce of Mumbai spent 2 decades trying to meite with Gandhi. Grandad's job began with ahving to sned Gandhi to priosn and ended in writing up the elagalese of India's Independence

Over the 4 centuries that Britain pakyed at ruling the waves, the india economy was decimated from the biggest in the world (around 1500 econoimes were cirrelelated) with ;population size to about 5%. In other words by the time the British left India pverty was systemic and the averge idian produced about a fifth of the average production of the mikddle of the 20th C. We can ask would Gandhi be happy with India's progress 1950-2020- lets look at spome more WRJC to see why the answer may be only pattlyh yes

what's the world's most valuable resource? If your answer is youth or girls you are at the place on the web that agrees with you - if you answered paper money, or carbon or tech or... you can help us translate your views but don't expect our people to change what we are centred around-- for over 50 years now (as man raced to the moon and yoko ono imagined what pop could do) when we started debating what if tech keeps on doubling every 7 years from 1946 to 2030

I am a statistician trained in the same maths labs as black hole's Hawkins at Cambridge- with MIT i have researched hundreds of global brand startegies across 50 countries and many market categories; when it comes to valuing systems intergenerational consequences, I am not intereted in how thousands time moore tech is used to advertise to people wherever IT (or what the 2020s calls AI)  could be more humanlly ditributed for livelihood education and life shaping needs locally all over the world

for example our 1984 book predicted the decade linking 2025 would be the most exciting time to be alive- education would need to be redesigned from bottom to top so that 21st children could celebrate ops of being 4000+ times moore connected not the threats (Orwell had already storytold that other endgame) .. new zealand is one of the geographically most disconnecetd places so experiments on the learningwebhave continuously played out since 1984 around gordon dryden a good friemd of my father Norman Macrae at The Economist- somehow 10 million chiense families reda gordon's book in the 1990s- he's too modest to stay so but livelihhod education for half a billion chiense youth became china's biggest reason for using new media- and jack ma became the UN;s favorite questioner of education revolution's possibilities wherever communities want girls and boys to be sustainable

its been an exciting journey in many other ways - for exmple we have listedned to so many excuses from those who design edication sytsem but dont value youth most- you can see the results wherever students are both in masive debt and without ligvelihoods- or whyerever a place says ou8r economy cant affird to ensure all job hungry yoth are in work-whats tragisc is there has never been more work t6o be done everywhere if we want to prevent extinction of our species and we have never had more ways of universally sharing what communities need youth to do and learn main cooperation project is search for world record jobs creators- lets go back before 1946 - on our scale of communications tech these were times indexed at one or less

in some ways it was easier to agree youth livelihood heroines (eg maria montessori)a nd heroes (eg gandhi) from history up to end of world war 2 -in searchoing for living world record jobs creators we need to find people who connect many things with the most curiosity and optimism  - both tech eg artificial intelligence and human loveq intelligence; both enough funds to make a digiotl cooperation grow and grow and the community permissions to be trusted with the data (or life critical challenges) you face - anyhow please tell us who we have left out in this quick tour of world record job creators whose life's impac was before 1946

WRJC 1.2 Marco Polo -old world's greatest explorer -the greatest world trade route before 1500 -days when economies correlated with sustainable populations- and trade was win-win
one of the fascinating maps that alumnji of marco polo can search out links the anthroplogical observation: traders from the west end of the silk road tended to value golden rule religions; cultures from the oriental end were developed around conscuousness training of an individual finding her or his raison d'eter
WRJC 1.3 saint francis is an interesting representaive of god has a higher purposes for us as he traingularised 3 actions in one- go and live and learn with the poorest- mail missionaries should particularly value nature- female networkers should practice last mile health (education) - if you look at the 17 sustainability gaols that over 150 nations gave converged on in defing our race to save our next generations from extintion francis three-in-one actions look well worth valuing youth round

WRJC 1.4 Confucius its interesting to us that the oriental end of the silk road- where the 2 most populous places China and India) were then and now valued traing next generation in the belief = yes life is hard, but meditate until you have freed yourslef from daily worries, fid the you that only you can be, how are you going to help your family and communities as servant of making life better- do you love yourself enough to have the courage to do this. Studying confucius is fascinating:
you see an organic common sense that united people across huge lands over many many generations - its an opposite dynamic to say how USA was built from 1500 to 1914- china may have discovered gunpowder but intetresting this nation was built o something different thansome mix of guns ad lawyers-   the people were already united before Americans had to charter a decalaration and amendments- china's attitude to bdiers of which it has over 15 direct ones is diferent to usa with its 2 borders; something else we can see from coinfucius is the value if rituals- take tea for example that has more varieties than french wine; a cup of premiium tea can cost more than a glass of wince; its built round an expereince in slowing down, reflecting on all that is graceful between generations; it maxiises value of the grower of the tea and creates livelihoods that link together aesthetics and culture- and then of cousre it connected with one of china's othe huge inventions - pottery and all the artistic opportunties to design fine china
One of the geatest lessons in the snales and ladders game of development of our spcies comes from understanding how the silk road was decimated as a world trade route during the 3rd quarter of the second millennium; Like all expoentials this started s;owly bu accelerated aroudn the double navigational finding - the new world to the west of europe; that europenas could saiul round africa and hit the souther coastal belt of Eurasian. The problem with Europe's new way to trade awith the old world was that you had to pressgang or enslave crews of mercatile boats- the long journey was frequently dealth ridden and when you got to your detination you had to use gin power ti make the trades you wanted. This soon led to Europans - mainly BRITs with the odd choris- ruke brutatni britania rukes the waves briotins never never skhall be slaves taking over the india suncontinent for theor own nations needs; and by 1860 the brits teached china and demanded opium be acepted as a curency for trading chinas speces silks piecs, teas - something China had to refise at the cost of cloising itself to the world for over a century
WRJC 1.5 Enter Adam Smith and his alumni who tried to map free markets around trust and transparency - and advaantage of natiosn around where the people wanted to unite fredom and happiness - smith life's gaol was to persuade english powers that be to design win-win tradees with USA instead of trying to cling on to colonisation of the new world. While smith failed fortunately Amerucans succeeded from the boston tea party on. Alumni of Adam Smith went one form 1843-1860 to debate with queen victoria what she needed to chnage from the policy of starving the Irish to the need to redesign trade with the whole of Asia. In 1843 The Economist was founded by James Wilson to medite tis dilaogue both with the royal family, members of parliamnt and london's high soecity. While Victorians' mind was turned to wards a commonwealth constiyution, histiry shows changes came too slow. The big picture hostory lesson of the two world wars were they had to be the end of the era of colnisation. Adam Smith's least known but arguably higly relevant treatise is on how the englisgdesigned higher education for the comfort of the professor and the buerucart not for valuing youth
WRJC 1.6 Keynes- lessons from redeesigning trading systems are nicely sumed up in the last chapter of keynes general teiry of emplyement money and interest. They argue for the hippocrtioc aoth of the profesisonl ecomiosts as designing systems ti end poverty out iof everyu community in such a way that familes can see their next generation has more opportunities to develop than their genertaion.
WRJC1.7 Florence nightingale lessons include- why not design communities so that nurses are value most - not in the snese of paying them the most money but loving to celebrate nurses as the greates local heroines. How would you design education systems so no community is lacking in nurses to love. Strangely her question remains one of the greatest chalenges most mdoern economist have failed to address as is evident wherever places or whole natiisn are not yet design so that no girl boy or adult dies before her time
WRJC1.8 How Alexander Fleming discoverd Penacilin and how it was then marketed are so different than how the global pharma comapnies and the national helth authorities behave today that we have a huge amount to study  -wth 4000 times more communicatuiosn technolgy why are the greatest intent compaines in the middle of make basic last mile health care 10 tiems moire affirdable everywhere - see our 1984 survy on using the health secoir as an advance waring sign of whether tech will be design to sustain all our children

Discoveries in navigation WRJC 1.9 da vinci 1 maths eg WRJC 1.10 newton, WJJC 1.11 engines, WRJC 1.12 electricity and WRJC 1.13 telephones also seem to have been much more open source and celebrated inquiry and exploration not siloisation of factoids for examining - gravitating alumni who massively created livelihoods rather than counted up money as their first reason d'etre - the economist phelps review the history of growth economics from the perspective of mass flourishing- we will see him in chapter.
Two 20th c brand marketers before world war 2 wwhich we larn a lot from our Coca Cola's WRJC14 Woodrow and WRJC15 Marks and Spencer's Marks-  to call them the last great brand marketers in the english langiage before broadcast television cofused uis all as a massively fake media is an exageration but you might like to understand how they valued customers and societies (the American Manufacturing Dream and a Northern England retailers Dream)
