The Most Valuable Question in Community Building World

 

How would you facilitate 5000 human brains to maximse their live interactions. This is a question which has seldom been researched in the West with legacy of empire and adminstrating top-down. Fortunately Harrison Owen innovated the maths and systems benchmark of how to practice this in 1984.

 

Fortunately because: world wide webs and personal computing networks started to emerge 5 years later.  This gives those people who want to see human technology amplified not replaced by artiificial intelligence an independent way of double checking how open system designs are.

 

Over 300000 open spaces have been facilitated criss-crossing almost every culture and age group known to be human. Alumni note:

Harrison tends to explain that the spiritual side comes partly from conveneing in circles when working as a young man in the peace corps in Africa. Partly that one branch of the Anglican church whose priesthood he attained before being changed has traditions of circular mediation such as the quakers.

 

Q&A with Harrison

1) What changed you?

I was standing on a civil rights field – a lanky tall white man standing in a criowd of black Americans and white police mounted ion horses were ablout to charge on us. I admit I was feeling afraid until a n 8 year old black girl came up to me: mister will you hold my had. From that moment on I decided I wanted to work on something more socially interactive than my academic studies in the priesthood.

2) What did you do next?

Truthfully I hurt a lot of family and friends who were very comfy with my career as a priest. But somehow I found my self organsing annual summits for the worldwide profession of system transformation. Our 1983 summit was a wake-up call. I had worked so hard to find podium speakers relevant to 2000 people coming together from around the world. But te audience survey showed that the coffee time was the most popular – the chance to network being what these 2000 people valued most from this once a year opportunity to innovate system transformation

3) Did they let you organise the 1984 summit? Surprisingly yes. But I too had a surprise for them. I had kept 1984’s speakers a mystery. As people assembled everyone started asking who were the speakers. I said there were none. You are all responsible for making a marketing of topics to debate and networking energetically over the next 3 days. Open Space was Born

4) What were the rules of this first Open space. There was then and is now only one rule : gte law of two feet. If you find yourself in a discussion which you cant contribute positively to, politely leave and find another dialogue to connect with

I have observed from the open spaces that Harrison moderates that there may only be 1 rule but there is a pattern. When people arrive on the first day they are asked to sit in a large circle. They are reminded of one overarching reason why they have all come. If necessary, Harrison tells some stories: he’s facilitated Practice of Peaces where the people who have come were literally at war with each other. Being hugely passionate about one context is actually what Harrison wants to facilitate. He may describe how the greatest innovations the world has ever seen are systemic ones – where everybody was trapped in a common broken system and sustainable innovation depended on empowering everyone to move over the same conflict barriers simultaneously. Pretty soon people are asked to walk into the middle of the circle and nominate a topic they want to host. Open space is structured so that even if dozens of topic conversations are occurring coincurrently, notes on any actions or experiments a group come up with are documented. Before the end of the 3 days the whole summit will receive documentation of every actionable possibility discussed and who to contact in the future if an emergent project interests you. Given this structure, Harrison is quite likely to add cheerful comments like Don’t worry about coming up with a popular topic. Some of my most innovative work came from when I was hosting a meeting with myself. I got the chance to put down all the actions I wanted to later search out a team to co-produce

 

 

Here are some contexts that illustrate Open Space’s width of apps:

 

Energising an annual global network at a live summit so that great virtual progress continues the other 362 days a year  

 

Assembling everyone involved in a schools community – children, teachers, ;parents, society, public servants – asking how to help everyone value children more as society’s greatest resource

 

Facing a challenge that has got hundreds of days behind schedule and putting it back on schedule and with better human quality than ever before

 

Restoring peace to a community or place that had lost it

 

Harrison is a great storyteller but his persons is incredibly modest. He likes to say his main job is to have a snooze while everyone else does the hard work lifting.

 

BEFORE AND AFTER OPEN SPACE

I have observed however that there are times when Harrison has worked for many years before convening an open space. So while nothing is more genuine than the  welcoming words “the people who come are the right people”, the invitations that have gone out- the diversity of information that has been  disseminated before people chose whether to come is often a labor of love.

 

I also conclude that while the job of the facilitator is to ensure every one is treated as an equal inside an open space, there remains the issue of if innovation work is needed  after open space who resources this and what ways can be found so that the future is open source for everyone who wanted that

 

SIMPLICITY AS KEY

I have probably attended 100 OS-called open spaces. I have noticed that any time a facilitator however well meaning add something it makes people flows more complicated. I am a maths guy with next to no facilitation skills of large number of people. But I advocate as strongly as I can to accept open space is the simplest benchmark ever to be found of its kind

 

I have been challenged about this remark by many types of people particularly technologists. Surely for example modern hackathons can innovate far more than open space.

 

One my responses is you may be right. But contextually my concern is that every sustainability crisis I have ever seen has spiraled through real communities. However brilliant a solution shared with me through a worldwide network may seem, if people I live with in everyday community cant apply it when they desperately need a solution, its not the whole truth innovation I am looking for
